Biographical Sketch

Richard Gerber is NERSC’s senior science advisor. Richard has been involved with leading-edge high performance computing (HPC) systems for 30 years, using early Cray vector systems at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA), the Connection Machine while a National Research Council Postdoctoral Fellow at NASA-Ames Research Center, and many generations of distributed-memory parallel computers as a staff member at NERSC since 1996. He holds a B.S. in physics from the University of Florida, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in physics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Richard is currently the hardware and integration director of the Department of Energy Exascale Computing Project.

At NERSC, he has been at the forefront of providing scalable HPC consulting services to its users, gathering HPC needs from scientific communities and implementing them at the center. As HPC Department head, he oversaw the Advanced Technologies, Application Performance, User Engagement, and Business Operations Groups at NERSC. In his current role, he coordinates science outreach and engagement efforts and helps communicate the value of scientific computing and science in general.

Richard is keenly interested in the automatic collection of HPC performance and runtime data and making it available on the web to help users monitor, debug, and optimize their applications.

He was the deputy project lead on the “NERSC 7” procurement (“Edison,” a Cray XC30 system) and currently leads the application performance and user support effort for “NERSC 9,” the “Perlmutter” system.

Richard holds a Ph. D. in physics, specializing in computational astrophysics, from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. After obtaining his Ph.D., he completed a National Research Council postdoctoral fellowship at NASA Ames Research Center. His specialty is using N-body and smoothed particle hydrodynamics to study colliding galaxies, particularly “ring” galaxies. He has a broad interest in science, particularly in the physical sciences.

The newest NERSC supercomputer Cori is a Cray XC40 system consisting of 2,388 Intel Xeon Haswell nodes and 9,688 Intel Xeon‐Phi “Knights Landing” (KNL) nodes. Compared to the Xeon‐based clusters NERSC users are familiar with, optimal performance on Cori requires consideration of KNL mode settings; process, thread, and memory affinity; fine‐grain parallelization; vectorization; and use of the high‐bandwidth MCDRAM memory. This paper describes our efforts preparing NERSC users for KNL through the NERSC Exascale Science Application Program, Web documentation, and user training. We discuss how we configured the Cori system for usability and productivity, addressing programming concerns, batch system configurations, and default KNL cluster and memory modes. System usage data, job completion analysis, programming and running jobs issues, and a few successful user stories on KNL are presented.

Extreme data science is becoming increasingly important at the U.S. Department of Energy's National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC). Many petabytes of data are transferred from experimental facilities to NERSC each year. Applications of importance include high-energy physics, materials science, genomics, and climate modeling, with an increasing emphasis on large-scale simulations and data analysis. In response to the emerging data-intensive workloads of its users, NERSC made a number of critical design choices to enhance the usability of its pre-exascale supercomputer, Cori, which is scheduled to be delivered in 2016. These data enhancements include a data partition, a layer of NVRAM for accelerating I/O, user defined images and a customizable gateway for accelerating connections to remote experimental facilities.

The current high-performance computing revolution provides opportunity for major increases in computational power over the next several years, if it can be harnessed. This transition from simply increasing the single-processor and network performance to a different architectural paradigms forces application programmers to rethink the basic models of parallel programming from both the language and problem division standpoints. One of the major computing facilities available to researchers in fusion energy is the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center. As the mission computing center for DOE, Office of Science, NERSC is tasked with helping users to overcome the challenges of this revolution both through the use of new parallel constructs and languages and also by enabling a broader user community to take advantage of multi-core performance. We discuss the programming model challenges facing researchers in fusion and plasma physics in for a variety of simulations ranging from particle-in-cell to fluid-gyrokinetic and MHD models.
