Denoising, filtering, assembling and annotating millions of genes from microbial communities associated with diverse environments such as soils are all very computationally demanding processes. The newset sequencing technologies are producing terabases of sequence data. The only solution to analyzing genomic information of this size is through high performance computing, where hundreds of nodes and terabytes of memory are available. Using the state-of the-art NERSC resources would allow us characterize the functional potential of these complex soil environments, discover potentially novel genes, and assemble environmental genomes.
